Risk-Based Subsurface Environmental Management

Instructors

  • Dr. Chin Man Mok, TUM-IAS Rudolf Diesel Industry Fellow and Principal Engineer at AMEC, USA
  • Dr. Ravi Arulanantham, Principal Toxicologist at Geosyntec, USA
  • James A. Jacobs, Fulbright Specialist and Chief Hydrogeologist at EBS, USA

The course will cover (1) assessment of the risks and uncertainties with the contaminant and routes of exposure as well as (2) development of a management and remediation strategy that will be appropriate to the risks and economics.  The instructors with background in toxicology, hydrogeology and engineering will discuss site assessment and remediation for the cleanup of petroleum hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents and heavy metals.  From the risk assessment, which drives the sampling and remedial approach, the instructors will discuss exposure pathways, assessment technologies, treatability testing, pilot testing and full-scale remediation.  The instructors will also discuss feasibility studies and evaluating remedial options with case examples.  The course will have an overview of a variety of soil and groundwater remedial technologies, including dual phase extraction, chemical oxidation, soil vapor extraction, air sparging, excavation and removal, recirculation wells/cells, capping, natural attenuation and enhanced bioremediation. In addition to the lectures, readings and in-class problems, the participants will be asked to work in small groups to evaluate different environmental data sets.
