ERC Grant for IAS Carl von Linde Senior Fellow Prof. Andrzej J. Buras

Professor Dr. Andrzej J. Buras has won an ERC (European Research Council) grant to promote his studies in flavour physics. He will receive 1.6 million euros in funding from 2011 to 2016. Professor Buras is full Professor for Theoretical Elementary Particle Physics in the Physics Department of TUM and a Carl von Linde Senior Fellow of the TUM Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) since 2007. In addition he is leading a Research Area a the Excellence Cluster Universe. He is one of the world’s leading scientists in the area of applied quantum field theory.
The topic of his ERC-funded project is the development of a basic theory of flavour that is a theory describing the masses and weak interactions of different quarks and leptons that each appear in six flavours.
A fundamental understanding of flavour violating interactons does not exist. The aim of Professor Buras and his team is to construct a theory of flavour that while being constistent with present observations would give a deep insight into flavour dynamics at very short distance scales and in particular explain the origin of matter-antimatter asymmetry observed in the universe that is crucial for our existence. The future results of flavour experiments at the Large Hadron Collider, the Belle II Experiment in Japan (KEK) and the Flavour Facility in Rome will play an important role in this project.
