Under the auspices of Stockholm Water Award Winner Prof. Peter Wilderer, TUM Emeritus of Excellence and Trustee of the IAS, the focus group research on satellite geodesy is accompanied by a more general scientific project. In a series of workshops and symposia concerned with the larger picture of the relationships between engineers and the earth as a geological and ecological system, a group of international scientists will explore possible research agendas for "the art of dealing wisely with planet earth".

The workshop results have been summarized in the Zugspitze Declaration:

The first draft of this declaration was signed by participants of the workshop on "Earth System Engineering: The Art of Dealing Wisely with the Planet Earth" during the concluding session held on September 26, 2008 in the premises of the Bavarian Experimental Research Station, the Scheefernerhaus (see picture on the front page), located at the upper slope of the Zugspitze, Germany.
The text of the declaration was revised in the course of an e-mail discussion that proceeded during October 2008, and brought into the present form.
