The TUM Institute for Advanced Study has a lean organization. It relies on the experience that excellent and responsible people elect individuals on their own level of performance. The Institute Management, responsible for the operational business, is headed by the Director who represents the Institute with regard to in-house and external affairs. He/she is responsible for finances, fundraising and and the selection of fellows based on the advice of the Advisory Council. The Director is appointed by the President of TU München based upon proposals submitted by the International Board of Trustees. He/she is a permanent guest on the TUM Executive Board of Management.

With regard to recruiting new fellows and setting the research agenda of the Institute, the Director is advised by the Advisory Council. This body comprises the expertise of former IAS members from a broad range of research areas. The Director prepares the annual report for the Board of Trustees and TUM describing the projects, achievements and eventual possible drawbacks that the Institute may have to face.
